Paintings of Horses: The Horse Fair by Rosa Bonheur by Halley Martin
Rosa Bonheur, a celebrated sculptor and Painter in the 1800s, is best known for her work on the “The Horse Fair” where she garnered multiple awards for her work. The oil on canvas painting was shown in exhibits in Paris, Ghent and Bordeaux. Then it was also exhibited in England and the United States where it is now one of the most popular Art works at the Metropolitan Museum. Not only known as the best among the category of Paintings of Horses, The Horse Fair became renowned for its accuracy to detail, mirroring the tree lined boulevard and the cupola of the Hôpital de la Salpêtrière and the fascinating visual imagery of the regular horse market during the era.
The Horse Fair artist, Rosa Bonheur, also became known for her controversial lifestyle as well as for her work. She was considered one of the women of the nineteenth century who were said to support the advocacy feminism through her empowered lifestyle that deviated from that of the women of her time. She wore trousers everywhere and even lived with other women as well, causing much talk on her gender and sexuality. Nevertheless, she remained one of the most famous woman Painters of her time through her contributions in art.
Many books have been written to relate The Horse Fair artist’s life and works. But, remaining true to her art, she focused more on her masterpieces by putting more of herself into her work. Considered quite an eccentric, Bonheur was talked about for her penchant for dressing in trousers like a man to be able to move and work freely on her projects. She even went as far getting herself a special license from the police to give her the freedom to dress as she please so she could be more comfortable in her work clothes.
Although Bonheur was a French native, she was more famous in England and in the United States, but never in her homeland during her time. This did not deter her though, from perfecting her art and her craft. Her dedication and her passion were appreciated by her high profile clients who included the Queen of England. Bonheur have had several other paintings of horses under her belt but The Horse Fair painting still lives on to be her best masterpiece and is now housed in the Metropolitan Museum in New York as one of their priceless collections.
About the Author
I have an old copy of this ” Horse Fair”. It appears to be finished in pencil or like a chalk of whatsoever material it is. I personally believe that the projection of ideas in Rosa Bonheur’s paintings of horses
is very much intensive. The dark skies with clouds adds glow to The Painting.
